Threads from the Heart

The mission of THREADS FROM THE HEART is to make dresses and shorts for children from impovished areas around the world.

This project is beginning in Haiti. Children in other areas around the globe will be touched by us as our supplies increase.

Prior to my first trip to Haiti in March 2012, I had seen news casts of the earthquake devastation from Jan. 2010.  I had also read of how Haiti was the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and I had donated money to help with the cause.

Before I left for Haiti, I was concerned about the living conditions, water, food, and the diseases, for which I had all the proper vaccinations.

There is no denying the visible devastation that is still taking place in Haiti. The palace is still destroyed, buildings and homes destroyed, trash piles in the streets, lack of proper sanitation, lack of clean water, and tent camps still house thousands of Haitians. This is only a partial list of the country’s difficulties.

I had read how poor the country was before the earthquake, and how this natural disaster set the people even further into poverty. As we drove around the city of Port-au-Prince, I was shocked at the amount of poverty, everywhere you looked. Haiti gave me a new definition of ‘poverty’. Often asking myself, “What can I do?”.

Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:37-40

LOOK beyond the destruction and poverty, and you will see real people, with real challenges. I was continually amazed at the friendliness and resilience of the Haitian people. There is true beauty that lies within the people of Haiti. Many people, old and young, shared their smiles. They captured my heart.

THREADS FROM THE HEART will make dresses for the girls in Haiti. Top priorities of the people are shelter, food, water, sanitation, and medical needs. These dresses may not fall in that list, but they do fall into the list of ‘love your neighbor’ which is Gods top priority. Each stitch on each dress will be made by a hand that shares their love for another.
